This project involved the comprehensive urban redevelopment of Avinguda Meritxell, a major commercial and civic avenue in Andorra la Vella. The intervention focused on enhancing pedestrian accessibility and commercial vitality while respecting the symbolic and spatial roles of the avenue within the city. By eliminating traditional curbs and unifying vehicular and pedestrian levels, the design dissolves rigid boundaries and allows for fluid movement along the avenue.
A core feature of the project is the integration of custom-designed urban furniture and distinctive steel canopy structures resembling abstract trees. These metal elements not only support commercial signage and lighting but also contribute to a renewed identity for the street. The paving patterns were inspired by natural flow, referencing both vehicular movement and the river that crosses the city. This abstract motif reinforces the idea of Avinguda Meritxell as a continuous urban landscape rather than a segmented street.
The selection of materials, colored asphalt, corten steel profiles, and prefabricated concrete benches reflects the project’s balance between robustness and design sophistication. Landscape elements include the planting of Prunus serrulata Kanzan trees, arranged to complement the structural layout.
Executed through a detailed multi-phase plan, the redevelopment transformed Meritxell into a civic backbone that unites Andorra’s institutional core with its commercial activity, offering residents and visitors a renewed and symbolic public realm.
