Nen is a sculptural wooden chair designed by Enric Miralles in collaboration with Benedetta Tagliabue. Conceived as a functional yet poetic piece of furniture, the chair reflects Miralles’s distinctive architectural language, characterized by expressive, organic forms and an intrinsic relationship between structure and motion. Its dynamic shape and seemingly gravity-defying posture exemplify the fusion of artistic experimentation and ergonomic intention.
Produced by Sellex, the Nen chair was originally designed as part of the furniture collection for the Scottish Parliament, where it serves as visitor seating in the main tribune. Its versatility and emblematic silhouette have led to its inclusion in other architectural works by EMBT, including the CÃrculo de Lectores in Madrid and the University of Vigo. Made of oak wood, the chair carries forward the studio’s commitment to craftsmanship and material authenticity.
Nen has recently been re-presented within the exhibition Perpetuum Mobile at Alcova Milan 2023, alongside other furniture and object designs by Enric Miralles, re-edited by Benedetta Tagliabue and EMBT. This renewed visibility affirms Nen’s status not only as a utilitarian object but also as a piece of architectural memory, a manifestation of Miralles’s enduring legacy in both space and object design.
