Facing the mouth of Sandtorhafen, the Magellan Terrassen create a stepped urban square descending toward the Elbe. The topography of terraces and seating steps hosts informal gatherings, performances, and daily strolls, while the sequence of walls and ramps accommodates the tidal changes. The material grammar, brick, concrete, and wood—and the seasonal planting establish a space of warmth and versatility. Together with the Marco Polo Terrassen across the basin, they form a pair of urban landmarks defining HafenCity’s new social waterfront.
Part of the development of HafenCity Public Spaces in Hamburg, Germany. After winning the competition in 2002.
