Grasbrookpark is a vibrant neighbourhood park located at the heart of the western district of HafenCity, Hamburg. Encompassing approximately 7,100 m², it was developed with a strong participatory process involving children, teenagers and local residents, who helped shape a green and playful landscape tailored for all ages.
The terrain is gently modelled to generate a diversity of zones from tranquil lawns to lively play and climbing areas. Central to the design is a water-play zone: a basin, meandering channels and fountains reflect the idea of an “Elbe with islands”.
Materials draw from HafenCity’s port heritage: paving in yellow granite and concrete slabs, structured by inlaid patterns, ensure both durability and visual identity. The park is framed by hedges shaped like ships, reinforcing the maritime memory of the site.
As a seamless extension of the urban fabric, Grasbrookpark links residential, educational and recreational uses inviting both neighbourhoods and visitors to linger, play and connect with the waterfront.
Part of the development of HafenCity Public Spaces in Hamburg, Germany. After winning the competition in 2002.
