The Dalmannkai Treppen; a series of stairs and stepped platforms, embody the project’s philosophy of bringing people closer to the water while negotiating the difference between flood levels. Their sequence of landings, ramps, and viewpoints connects the upper streets, the promenade, and the mooring level. The tactile robustness of brick klinker and prefabricated stone contrasts with the softness of planted areas, introducing a human scale to the large harbor structures. Both circulation and leisure space, the Treppen represent HafenCity’s approach to resilience: accessible, adaptable, and inviting.
Part of the development of HafenCity Public Spaces in Hamburg, Germany. After winning the competition in 2002.
