The restoration of Castell de Gessamà aims to preserve its historical value while introducing modern comforts, transforming an abandoned space into a romantic and functional place for citizens. The intervention includes recovering the original spatial structure by removing modifications from the 19th and 20th centuries, revealing historical traces on walls, and maintaining period details. The restoration strategy also focuses on preserving the castle’s main façades, using natural materials like stone, terracotta, and wood.
A new wooden perimeter bench integrates lighting, ventilation, and installations, allowing modernization without compromising the essence of the castle. Sustainability measures include geothermal energy, rainwater reuse, and connection to an existing biomass heating network. The project also introduces a new circulation system, featuring an elevator and internal pathways.
Vegetation plays a key role in transforming the castle into an idyllic space, covering galleries and courtyards with greenery. The functional strategy repurposes the castle into a public building with gastronomic spaces, a museum, offices, a civic center, and co-working areas, making it a dynamic and accessible space for the community.
