BOTAN is a modular sofa designed by Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) in collaboration with Passoni Nature. Inspired by the natural elegance of a flower; specifically, the peony (botan in Japanese) – the design merges botanical form with tactile materials, resulting in a piece that evokes both sculptural delicacy and structural comfort.
The composition of BOTAN mimics petals gently layered together, achieved through the careful integration of solid wood elements with hand-assembled fabric panels. These textiles are crafted by reconfiguring floral-patterned strips in harmonious tones, referencing the bottom-figure technique. Two poufs complete the system, allowing for endless combinations that can transform into visual “flowers” and “butterflies” depending on the spatial arrangement.
While a single module creates a welcoming seat for intimate environments, the system’s versatility allows it to expand into large-scale installations suitable for public or collective use. The design reflects EMBT’s philosophy of blending tradition and innovation, and Passoni Nature’s commitment to sustainability and artisanal excellence.
Crafted with eco-conscious materials, such as zero-emission adhesives, natural fiber upholstery, and renewable-source stuffing, BOTAN is more than furniture. It is a holistic approach to wellbeing, aesthetics, and ecological awareness. This modular sofa was officially presented at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in April 2014, as a showcase of Italian craftsmanship and poetic design vision.
